Thank You Card
As part of my internship at Big Storm, I was tasked with designing a branded thank-you card that combined custom illustration with carefully considered typography. The goal was to create a piece that felt warm and personal while still reflecting the professionalism and identity of the Big Storm brand. From the beginning, the project required a delicate balance between creativity and brand alignment.
One of the biggest challenges was selecting a script font that complemented the hand-drawn background without sacrificing readability. Finding a typeface that captured the right tone—friendly yet polished—required testing numerous font options and evaluating how they interacted with the illustration. At times, the layout felt overly busy, leading to refinements in both the background artwork and typography to ensure clarity and cohesion.
The process involved multiple iterations, including simplifying the illustration, adjusting the type hierarchy, and exploring font pairings that better communicated the intended message. These revisions ultimately led to a final design that strikes a strong visual balance—inviting and expressive, while still feeling consistent with Big Storm’s brand voice. This project strengthened my ability to refine design through iteration, work within brand parameters, and create a product that communicates both gratitude and identity.
My Experience with Big Storm
During my internship at Big Storm, I was given the opportunity to design a branded thank-you card—an assignment that allowed me to merge illustration with brand-focused design in a meaningful way. This project was a chance to step outside of digital layouts and explore how Big Storm’s identity could be expressed through a more tactile, print-based piece. I was trusted to take the lead on both the visual direction and typographic choices, with feedback and collaboration built into the process.
The project required balancing creativity with brand consistency. While the illustrative style gave me room to experiment visually, I had to remain mindful of tone, legibility, and how the final piece would represent the company to clients and collaborators. Working on this project within a professional setting taught me how to adapt personal design instincts to meet a client’s needs—an essential skill I developed further throughout the internship. It was a rewarding experience that helped me grow not only as a designer, but as a thoughtful contributor within a creative team.
